EDM FAQ

  • What is wire EDM?

Wire EDM is a precision material processing technology that is mainly used for cutting electrically conductive materials. It utilizes the principle of electric spark discharge to remove material by means of a discharge between a fine metal wire (usually copper or nickel wire) and the work-piece, resulting in high-precision cutting.

  • What is the workflow of wire cutting machine?

Wire EDM can machine a wide range of complex shapes with great precision. It is particularly good at machining sharp internal corners, complex contours and fine patterns. Wire EDM can handle both 2D and 3D geometries and can process convex, concave, convex-concave molds, fixing plates, unloading plates, forming tools, sample plates, fine holes and grooves, narrow slits, arbitrary curves, and much more.

  • What is the usual accuracy that can be achieved with wire EDM?

The accuracy of wire EDM machining can often be achieved to tight tolerances of ±0.0001 inches. This high level of precision makes it ideal for parts that require complex shapes and small features, such as moulds, aerospace components and precision mechanical parts. In addition, the process provides a smooth surface finish, often without the need for additional finishing.

  • What shapes can be processed by wire EDM?

Wire EDM can machine a wide variety of complex shapes with a high degree of precision. It is particularly good at machining sharp internal corners, complex contours and fine patterns. WEDM can handle both 2D and 3D geometries and can process convex, concave, convex-concave dies, fixed plates, unloading plates, molding tools, sample plates, fine holes and grooves, narrow slits, arbitrary curves, and more.

  • What are the main limitations of wire EDM?

    - The limitations of wire EDM mainly stem from its working principle and technical characteristics:

Material Limitations: Only applicable to conductive materials, such as metals (stainless steel, aluminum, etc.) and certain conductive plastics, non-conductive materials cannot be processed.

    - Cutting speed: Compared with other cutting methods (e.g. laser cutting), the processing speed of wire EDM is slower, especially in the cutting of thick materials.

    - Cutting Thickness: For extremely thick materials, the efficiency and accuracy of wire EDM may be reduced, and it is usually suitable for medium thickness work-pieces.

    - Cost: Equipment and maintenance costs are high, especially for high-precision models. In addition, the consumption of electrode wires adds to the overall cost.

    - Post-processing requirements: Although the surface quality is better after cutting, in some cases follow-up processing is still required to achieve higher surface finish or accuracy requirements.

    - Operational complexity: Specialized operators are required for programming and monitoring, and operation is relatively complex, especially when dealing with complex shapes.
