Steps of CNC milling part processing
CAD design: CNC milling processing begins in the design stage, where design engineers use CAD (computer-aided design) software to create a three-dimensional part model. The model specifies the size, shape, processing features and tolerance requirements of the part.
CAM programming: After the CAD design is completed, the model will be imported into CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software for programming. CAM software generates G-code to guide the machine tool for processing by simulating the milling process. During the programming process, it is necessary to set processing parameters such as tool path, feed rate, cutting depth, etc. to ensure efficient and accurate material removal.
Material selection: CNC milling can process a variety of materials, such as metals (aluminum, steel, titanium, etc.), plastics, wood and composite materials. The choice of materials depends on the functional requirements, durability and cost control of the part.
Fixture installation and tool preparation: The workpiece needs to be fixed on the milling machine table with a special fixture to ensure stability during processing. Then, according to the different characteristics of the part, select the appropriate tool, such as face milling cutter, end mill, drill, etc. The choice of tool directly affects the processing quality and efficiency of the part.
CNC milling: At the beginning of the process, the CNC machine controls the tool movement according to a pre-programmed program. The tool moves along the X, Y, and Z axes in a specific trajectory to process the workpiece. CNC milling can complete plane processing, groove processing, hole processing, bevel processing, and complex three-dimensional shape processing.
Quality inspection and control: After the parts are processed, quality inspection must be carried out. Inspection tools include vernier calipers, micrometers, and three-dimensional coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) to ensure that the parts meet the tolerances and accuracy required by the design.
Surface treatment and post-processing: For some parts, after the milling process is completed, surface treatment or subsequent processing is required, such as deburring, heat treatment, surface coating (such as anodizing, electroplating), etc., to ensure the corrosion resistance, hardness or aesthetics of the parts.
