Why Sheet Metal Parts Need Self-Clinching Fasteners
Self-clinching fasteners (such as self-clinching nuts, studs, and screws) are commonly used in sheet metal fabrication. Their main purpose is to create reliable threaded or fastening points on thin sheet metal parts.
Main Reasons and Functions of Using Self-Clinching Fasteners on Sheet Metal

1.Sheet metal is too thin to be tapped directly.
The thickness of sheet metal parts is typically between 0.5–3 mm, which is too thin to produce durable threads through direct tapping.
2.To enhance connection strength and stability.Self-clinching fasteners are mechanically locked or embedded into the sheet through cold extrusion deformation, providing much higher strength than welded nuts or self-tapping screws.
3.To avoid welding and improve assembly efficiency.
Unlike welded nuts, the clinching process requires no high temperature, does not damage surface coatings, and is highly efficient. Once the fastener is installed, screws can be directly assembled, making the process quick and convenient.
