What is sheet metal fabrication?

Sheet metal fabrication involves a series of processes, including cutting, stamping, bending, welding, riveting, painting, and assembly, to produce sheet metal into specific shapes and sizes that meet customer needs and design requirements.

Advantages of Sheet Metal Fabrication

1. Accuracy and Efficiency

Sheet metal fabrication offers top-notch accuracy and efficiency, making it suitable for producing both prototypes and end-use parts. Furthermore, it's crucial to understand that most sheet metal techniques are automated. Using CAD software and CNC machining eliminates human error. As a result, the final product typically exhibits minimal or no deformation.

2. Versatility

Sheet metal fabrication processes utilize a range of techniques and tools. This makes it easy to choose the most appropriate method for your project. Furthermore, metal component manufacturing doesn't limit the materials one can use; there are over a thousand compatible metals. However, the end-use application of the part will influence the material you use.

3. High-Volume Production at a Low Cost

Sheet metal fabrication allows you to achieve production capacity that matches market demand. While initial costs may be high and setup times lengthy, it improves once production begins. The more parts you produce, the greater the savings.

4. Lightweight Component Manufacturing

Sheet metal manufacturing produces lightweight yet durable parts. Its excellent weight-to-strength ratio makes it suitable for automotive and aerospace component manufacturing. Ultimately, it reduces manufacturing costs and improves fuel efficiency. 5. Custom Design Sheet metal fabrication can be used to come up with innovative designs to build custom and unique parts. Its flexibility makes it easy to transform sheet metal into personalized and aesthetically pleasing components.

Common sheet metal bending techniques include:

1. Manual Folding

If you don't have a press brake, manually bending sheet metal is an option. First, you need to calculate the bending tolerance of the sheet metal based on the type of metal being used. Next, mark the bend lines with a marker and cut the sheet metal to the appropriate size.

Securely place the sheet metal in a vise, using a wooden block as a guide for the shape or angle you want to bend the board. Next, gently tap the sheet metal with a mallet until the metal deforms. This method is only recommended for sheets 2 mm thick or less, as thicker sheets may break.

While manually bending sheet metal is a quick and easy method, it doesn't guarantee the quality and precision that a press brake can provide. For thicker sheets or more complex bends, a press brake is recommended to avoid sheet breakage.

2. Press Bending Machine

Press bending machines are essential for fabricating structures involving sheet metal fabrication. They bend sheet metal by stamping it into the correct shape using a die.

There are two types of bending machines: mechanical and hydraulic. Press bending machines allow you to create V-shaped or U-shaped bends. A V-bend is formed when metal is punched into the shape of a die.

This type of bend can only be performed with sheet metal thicknesses up to 2 mm. Air bending can also be performed using a press brake, where the punch only presses the sheet metal to the desired angle, rather than fully pressing it into the die. A press brake is a versatile tool that can perform a variety of bends on sheet metal of varying thicknesses.

3. Laser Bending

Laser bending is a relatively new technology that relies on the precision of a laser beam to produce high-quality bends. A laser bend combines the advantages of a laser cutter and a press brake.

First, a laser is used to cut the sheet metal into the desired shape and size. Next, the laser is used to heat the area of the sheet metal to be bent, making it more ductile and easier to bend.

After the sheet metal is heated, a conventional press brake performs the bend. This sheet metal bending technology offers several advantages, including the ability to quickly and accurately bend and bend very thick sheets. It can also bend at very large angles without the risk of deforming or cracking the sheet metal.
