What Is Masking ?

In machining and surface treatment processes, masking (also known as avoiding coating) is a very important step. Especially in processes such as electroplating, painting, powder coating, and anodizing, masking ensures part functionality and assembly accuracy.

What Is Masking?

Masking is essentially the selective prevention of coating formation on specific areas of a part, ensuring these areas remain as bare metal or functional surfaces.

Common masked areas include threaded holes, locating holes, precision mating surfaces, bearing bores, and fastening surfaces.

Masking Methods

1.Physical Masking 

Materials such as tapes, rubber plugs, silicone plugs, and plastic plugs are used to cover areas that need to remain uncoated. After the coating process is completed, the masking materials are removed.

Rubber stoppers and silicone stoppers are ideal for use in holes, threads, and studs. Silicone has good acid resistance.

Adhesive tapes: Polyester tapes, vinyl tapes, or lead foil tapes, using silicone adhesives, have good chemical resistance and are easy to remove.

Features: Simple operation and low cost; suitable for most parts.

2.Chemical / Liquid Masking

Before plating or spraying, a dedicated protective agent or liquid masking compound (such as wax, varnish, stop-off lacquer, or liquid latex) is applied to the areas that require masking.

Features: Suitable for parts with complex geometries or multiple holes; provides uniform masking results.

3.Post-Processing Coating Removal

For already coated parts, unwanted coating can be removed by secondary machining, chemical stripping, or laser removal.

Features: Suitable for complex geometries or areas that cannot be masked before coating; can also be used as a corrective or remedial measure.

In actual production, engineers select or combine these methods based on part geometry, coating process, and functional requirements to ensure precise and reliable masking.

Functions of Masking

1.Ensuring dimensional accuracy: Prevents coating buildup on threaded holes, mating surfaces, and high-precision areas, ensuring smooth assembly and accurate fits.

2.Maintaining electrical conductivity: For example, anodized coatings are insulating; masking before anodizing ensures that certain metal areas remain electrically conductive.

3.Aesthetic purposes: Creates contrasting surface finishes or keeps specific areas uncoated for visual or design reasons.
