What Is Hard Chrome Plating?

Hard chrome plating is different from the decorative chrome commonly seen on automotive trim. It is an electroplating process that deposits a relatively thick layer of chromium metal onto the surface of various metal substrates, including steel, stainless steel, copper, and more.

Its key characteristics are thickness and hardness:

Hardness: The hardness of hard chrome plating can typically reach HRC 65–70 (HV 800–1100), which is significantly harder than most industrial steels.

Thickness: Decorative chrome plating is usually only a few microns thick, while hard chrome plating typically ranges from 10 μm to 500 μm, and can be even thicker for repair and dimensional restoration applications.

Hard chrome is one of the industrial metal coatings known for its low coefficient of friction and excellent wear resistance. 2. Excellent Corrosion Resistance

3. Dimensional Restoration and Compensation

This is one of the major advantages of hard chrome plating in precision machining. If a component has become undersized due to wear or machining errors, we can use a “thick chrome plating + secondary precision grinding” process to restore the part to the required dimensions and tolerances.

4. Low Friction and Anti-Sticking Properties

For injection molds and food-processing equipment, the low surface energy and smooth surface of hard chrome can make demolding easier and reduce material adhesion.
