Titanium & Tungsten

In modern precision manufacturing, if aluminum alloys are considered the “all-rounders,” then titanium and tungsten stand at the very top of the materials pyramid as true “hardcore metals.” With their exceptional physical properties, they have become indispensable materials in aerospace, medical devices, defense, and high-energy physics industries.

Titanium: Lightweight Like Aluminum, Strong Like Steel

Titanium is a lightweight, high-strength, corrosion-resistant metal, often referred to as the “space metal” and “biomedical metal.”

Key Characteristics

  • Extremely high strength-to-weight ratio:
Titanium offers the strength of steel while weighing only about 60% as much.
  • Outstanding corrosion resistance:
It remains highly resistant to seawater and many acidic or alkaline environments.
  • Excellent elasticity and ductility:
Strong impact resistance with excellent resilience.
  • Biocompatibility:
Titanium does not trigger rejection reactions in the human body, making it an ideal material for implants.

Machining Challenges

Titanium is widely known as a “difficult-to-machine material,” primarily due to its poor thermal conductivity. Heat generated during machining rapidly concentrates at the cutting edge, significantly shortening tool life. In addition, titanium has a low elastic modulus, which can easily lead to deflection and vibration when machining slender parts.

Applications

Aircraft engine blades, orthopedic implants, deep-sea exploration equipment, and high-end racing bicycle components.

Tungsten: The Ultimate Combination of Hardness and Density

If titanium is the master of balance, then tungsten represents the extreme. Its melting point (3422°C) is the highest among all metals, and its density is close to that of gold.

Key Characteristics

  • Low thermal expansion coefficient:
Its linear expansion coefficient is approximately (≈4.5×10⁻⁶/°C), only about one-third that of steel, ensuring excellent dimensional stability during machining. This makes tungsten especially suitable for ultra-precision and micro-scale components.
  • Extremely high hardness and wear resistance:
Tungsten maintains exceptional strength even under high temperatures.
  • High density and shielding capability:
Excellent radiation shielding performance, far superior to lead.
  • Outstanding heat resistance:
Its extremely high melting point allows it to maintain structural stability in extreme high-temperature environments.

Machining Challenges

Tungsten is highly brittle and prone to chipping or cracking during room-temperature machining. Its severe tool wear places extremely demanding requirements on machine rigidity, cutting parameters, and process control precision.

Applications

Nuclear shielding components, balancing weights for racing and aerospace industries, plasma spray electrodes, high-temperature components, industrial cutting tools, and semiconductor equipment.

  • Industrial tooling:
Many cutting tools are made from tungsten carbide due to its excellent wear resistance, heat resistance, and long service life.
  • Electronics industry:
Tungsten offers stable electrical conductivity and excellent high-temperature resistance, making it widely used in electrodes, vacuum equipment, and semiconductor equipment.
