In-Depth Analysis of Metal Heat Treatment: Process Categories and Core Principles

2026-07-30

Heat treatment is a critical stage in the manufacturing of mechanical parts and tools. By altering the microstructural phase of a material—either on the surface or internally—it enhances properties such as wear and corrosion resistance while improving stress distribution for subsequent processing.

Heat treatment processes are generally divided into three categories:

  1. Bulk Heat Treatment: Heating and cooling the entire workpiece.

  2. Surface Heat Treatment: Altering only the surface layer’s structure.

  3. Chemical Heat Treatment: Enhancing the surface by changing its chemical composition.

Heating & Protection: Heating is a vital step. To prevent oxidation and decarburization at high temperatures, metals are often heated in controlled atmospheres, vacuums, or molten salts. The temperature must exceed the phase transformation point and be held for a specific "soaking time" to ensure complete microstructural transition.
Cooling Control: The cooling rate determines the final properties. Generally, annealing has the slowest cooling rate, normalizing is faster, and quenching is the fastest.
