How do you choose the right type of anodizing for your parts?

2026-04-01

Anodizing is an electrochemical process that creates a durable, corrosion-resistant oxide layer on aluminum. By adjusting bath chemistry, temperature, and voltage, the same basic process can produce very different coatings—from decorative to extreme wear protection.

*Type I – Chromic Acid Anodizing
Film thickness: 0.5–5 μm

Best for: Fatigue-sensitive parts, aerospace, precision components, thin walls, complex die castings.

Key standard: MIL-A-8625 Type I

*Type II – Sulfuric Acid Anodizing
Film thickness: 1.8–25 μm

Best for: Decorative finishes, coloring, consumer electronics, architectural hardware.

Key standard: MIL-A-8625 Type II

*Type III – Hard Anodizing
Film thickness: 25–100+ μm, hardness > HV500

Best for: Wear-resistant parts, hydraulic systems, automotive components (brakes, gears).

Key standard: MIL-A-8625 Type III

*MAO (Micro-Arc Oxidation)
Film thickness: 50–200 μm, ceramic-like, hardness > HV1000

Best for: Extreme conditions (high temperature, abrasion, electrical insulation), engine parts, specialized industrial applications.

How to Choose
Decoration & color →Sulfuric Acid Anodizing

Wear resistance → Hard Anodizing

Fatigue-sensitive / precision → Chromic Acid Anodizing

Extreme environments →Micro-Arc Oxidation

Cost: Type II is most economical; MAO is highest.
