Celebrating Duan Holiday of the Shui Nationality!

We were invited to Qiannan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Guizhou to participate in the Shui people’s grandest traditional festival—the Duan Festival. Equivalent to the Chinese New Year, this festival is a time for the Shui people to celebrate a bountiful harvest and honor their ancestors.

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted at the airport by Carl. In the welcoming songs, we were led to our destination, filled with anticipation. There, we first experienced the traditional Shui welcome rituals. Known for their hospitality, the local people greeted each guest with traditional customs, showcasing their kindness and respect. We were also treated to local delicacies, especially sticky rice and fresh fish, which were not only delicious but also carried the Shui people's sincere blessings for their guests.

On October 26, we attended various activities at the central square. Horse racing was a highlight of the day, with riders displaying skill and bravery as they guided their sturdy horses, cheered on by enthusiastic spectators. The horsehair embroidery showcased the Shui people’s traditional craftsmanship, featuring vibrant colors and intricate designs, which were awe-inspiring. Additionally, the copper drum performances added to the festive atmosphere, with powerful beats resonating across the square, narrating the history and culture of the Shui people.

Through these events, we not only experienced the unique charm of the Shui culture but also strengthened our team spirit. As we shared laughter, stories, and experiences, we found ourselves closer together. This experience allowed me to truly appreciate the richness of traditional culture and treasure the wonderful moments spent with colleagues. The Duan Festival was more than just a celebration; it was an opportunity for us to reconnect, deepen our bonds, and create lasting memories together.
